Stress is a killer. There’s no way to deny that. The ill-effects of stress on health are well documented.
The top ten list of health related effects of stress include hot topic health issues like diabetes, depression, obesity, ulcers, heart disease, and hair loss. That’s just to get started.
Beyond the stress issue there is a quality of life issue. It’s hard to sit back, relax, and enjoy life when you’re stressed out all the time over what’s going on in your life.
Your home is supposed to be your oasis from the worries of the world. For many people, however, their homes are the cause of much of the stress in their lives. Or, rather, the lack of organization in their homes.
What can you do to make sure that lack of organization isn’t causing you undue stress?
Begin with the Basics
Take a look around your home and see what kind of organization exists. Does everything in your home have a place it’s supposed to be? Is everything in its proper place?
Many people have more “stuff” than they know what to do with. They definitely don’t have an identifiable “spot” for everything which leaves a lot of things simply lying around gathering dust and causing visual (not to mention mental) clutter.
Get rid of things you don’t use and don’t foresee yourself using in the near future. Sentimentality is great but if it isn’t really important to you the space it frees up and stress it reduces is more valuable than having the additional possessions.
Institute a Buying Freeze
At least end all buying of new “stuff” until you’ve organized the things you already have. There’s no point in obtaining more possessions until you’re sure of what you have. If your house is a sea of disorganized chaos you may be buying something very similar to what you already have.
Even if it isn’t all that bad and you’d like to have the item you want to buy there is the fact that you don’t have a place to put it – at least not yet. Once you get things organized you may discover you have a lot more space than you realized and then begin buying again.
Use Space Wisely
Don’t rule out open spaces on walls for organization. You can use peg boards and hooks in the kitchen to hang measuring cups, kitchen tools, strainers, lids, pots, and pans. You can use them in kid’s rooms for hanging jewelry, dress-up clothes, and even for displaying hanging craft projects.
Be creative with the space you have and realize that you can use vertical space for storage and organization in addition to those horizontal spaces that seem to collect clutter.
